I'm having general anesthesia. What special instructions do I need to follow?
You should have nothing to eat or drink (including water) for 6 hours prior to your surgical appointment. Failure to do so could result in death as a result of vomiting under anesthesia. We would also ask that you refrain from smoking for 6 hours prior to your surgical procedure. If you are currently taking medication, please take it as directed unless told not to do so by your doctor.
If you were given an antibiotic to start before your surgery, please take it as instructed at your consultation. Please be advised of possible interference with the birth control pill during antibiotic usage. Contraceptives may be rendered less effective when taken concurrently with antibiotics. We recommend an additional method of contraception for the rest of that cycle's package of pills. If you are unsure of your instructions, please call the office.
Patients receiving general anesthesia are required to bring a responsible person at the time of surgery to drive you home. It is absolutely necessary that your drive make arrangements to stay at the office the entire time of your surgery.
It is imperative that after surgery someone be at home with you. You will be very sleepy and unable to take care of yourself initially. You will need help with changing your gauze, fixing your meals and taking your pain medication. Please make arrangements for this on your day of surgery.
Please empty your bladder before you are brought back to the operatory for your surgery.
Will I need to return for any post-operative appointments after my surgery?
Please be prepared to return for suture removal 7-10 days after your surgery, if sutures are placed.
I was told not to have anything to eat or drink before my surgery. Does that include water?
You should have nothing to eat or drink (including water) for 6 hours prior to your surgical appointment. Failure to do so could result in death as a result of vomiting under anesthesia. If you are required to take any medications on the date of your surgery, please do so with small sips of water. When brushing your teeth prior to surgery, rinse your mouth, and avoid swallowing any unnecessary water.
Can I fly after surgery?
Because this depends upon the procedure being completed, we recommend discussing this with your doctor at the consultation. In the case of some minor surgeries (simple extractions, lesions), it may be OK to fly after surgery. Although, if you have major surgery completed (extraction of wisdom teeth, osteotomies, implants, sinus lifts), we recommend that you do not fly for approximately 3-4 days after your surgery.
My brother is 18 years old. Can he drive me to the consultation and evaluation appointments?
If you are a minor under the age of 18, a parent or legal guardian is required to escort you for the purpose of signing the Surgical Consent Form and other legal documentation, as well as to escort you home.
How many days should I expect to be off work following surgery?
The number of days expected to be off work following surgery depends upon the procedure being completed. A guideline for time off is as follows:
- Single Tooth Extraction (with General Anesthesia) - 1 day
- Multiple Teeth Extractions - 2 to 3 days
- Impacted Wisdom Teeth - 3 days
- Pathology Procedures (with Local Anesthesia ) - none
- Pathology Procedures (with General Anesthesia ) - 1 day
- Hospital Surgeries (including, but not limited to, Fractures, Osteotomies, TMI and Staple Implants) - 3 days minimum
- Implants (with Local Anesthesia) - none
- Implants (with General Anesthesia) - 1 day
